Piri Piri (also known as African Bird’s Eye) is a Swahili word meaning ‘pepper-pepper’ referring to any variety of chilli. However in Portugal the name is associated with a variety of Capsicum Frutescens, known as a small fiery hot chilli.
Portuguese traders carried the seeds to their African colonies of Angola and Mozambique and from there they spread across Africa.
Piri Piri are hot, with a touch of sweetness and measure 50mm long by 5 mm wide, ripening from green to red when mature in upright clusters. With the right care the plant can grow to a height of 85cm, and produce many peppers.
